Background
According to current research, homes and buildings consume 40 percent of the energy generated in the United States—more than vehicles. In many cases, this energy consumption not only wastes precious natural resources but also leads to higher operating costs for organizations and less funds
available for programs. Particularly for nonprofits, an investment in energy efficiency can lead to real savings that can be applied towards programming or saved to provide long-term financial security.
The Challenge
The process for making a nonprofit facility more energy efficient, however, is complex and requires
among other things technical expertise and analysis to assess a building’s performance, access to
financing to pay for any recommended efficiency upgrades, and active project management to see
the process through from an initial energy audit to managing the construction process and finally
monitoring the impact and savings of recommended improvements. While nonprofits are well-versed in delivering programs and changing lives, few have the experience and capacity to manage
the process on their own. For that reason, READS created a program helping nonprofits to improve the energy performance of their facilities.
READS is currently offering nonprofit partners:
- Support to navigate the array of energy efficiency programs available to nonprofits such as New Jersey’s Office of Clean Energy Local Government Energy Audit program;
- Streamlined and cost-effective process for obtaining an energy audit on your facility;
- Detailed reports prescribing energy savings measures as well as suggested capital
- improvements with the ability to significantly reduce your operating expenses; and
- Follow-up including the identification of programs for implementing low-cost energy
- efficiency improvements as well as potential sources of funding for capital improvements.
